VFD Maintenance: Process, Common Faults and Solutions

A variable frequency drive (VFD) controls motor speed and saves energy in most production lines. Regular VFD maintenance reduces the risk of sudden downtime and extends equipment service life.

01Routine VFD maintenance tasks

  • Clean dust from heat sinks, cooling fans and ventilation slots.
  • Check and retighten cable lugs and power/motor terminal connections.
  • Measure input/output voltage, load current and enclosure temperature.
  • Inspect the DC bus capacitors and cooling fan — the two components that wear out fastest.
  • Back up parameter settings for quick recovery when equipment needs to be replaced.

02Common VFD faults

  • Overcurrent (OC): heavy load, mechanical jamming or an acceleration time that is too short.
  • Overvoltage (OV): deceleration that is too fast or an insufficient braking resistor.
  • Overheating (OH): failed fan, heavy dust buildup or poor cabinet ventilation.
  • Phase loss or phase imbalance in the power supply causing vibration and motor overheating.
  • Control signal interference from running control cables alongside power cables in the same tray.

03When to repair and when to replace?

If the fault is in the fan, capacitors or power module and replacement parts are still available, repairing is the cost-effective option.

If the VFD has reached the end of its service life, spare parts are no longer available, or the fault keeps recurring, replacing the unit is recommended to avoid prolonged line downtime.
