01Routine Variable Frequency Drive Maintenance
- Remove dust and dirt from heat sinks, cooling fans and ventilation slots.
- Check and retighten cable lugs, power terminals and motor cable terminals.
- Measure and check input – output voltage, load current and enclosure temperature.
- Check DC bus capacitors and cooling fans – the two components that wear out fastest.
- Back up parameter settings for quick restoration when replacing equipment.
02Common Variable Frequency Drive Faults
- Overcurrent (OC): heavy loads, mechanical jams or an acceleration time that is too short.
- Overvoltage (OV): deceleration too fast, no braking resistor.
- Overheating (OH): fan failure, heavy dust buildup or poor panel ventilation.
- Supply phase loss and phase imbalance cause motor vibration and overheating.
- Control signal interference caused by routing signal cables in the same tray as power cables.
03When should you repair, and when should you replace?
If the fault is in the fan, capacitor, or power module and replacement parts are still available, repair is a cost-effective option.
If a variable frequency drive has reached the end of its service life, spare parts are no longer available, or it fails repeatedly, replacement is recommended to avoid prolonged production line downtime.
